Hassocks
Reshaping overgrown yews
A really enjoyable day bringing these yews back into shape. They’d been left too long, so some parts needed a harder cut than we’d usually make, but they’ll fill back in, and we’ll be keeping them in shape from here.

One of seven trees we took out of this garden in Patcham in a single day, with the stumps ground out afterwards.

A thin and reduction, done with small cuts
It took a lot of very small pruning cuts to thin and reduce this tree properly, but we’re very happy with the result.

Reducing a protected oak
This oak is protected by a Tree Preservation Order, and it had been very heavily cut back about eight years ago. We thinned out the regrowth and reduced back what was left, rather than cutting it hard again.

A hard reduction, back to growth points
Another climb for a returning customer, who asked for as much to come off as possible. We can only cut back to the growth points the tree has and still leave enough for it to recover, and this is the result.
Haywards Heath
Felling a decayed robinia
This robinia had to come down, for reasons the photos make fairly obvious. The customers put all the wood chip to use on paths in their own woodland and kept the timber to split for logs, as robinia burns very hot.

How much does tree surgery cost?
It depends on the tree and the job, but most domestic work costs between a few hundred and a couple of thousand pounds. The quickest way to find out? Send us a few photos on WhatsApp and we’ll give you a ballpark the same day. For anything more involved, we’ll pop round for a free look.
Do I need permission to cut down a tree in my garden?
Sometimes, yes. If your tree has a preservation order (TPO) you need council consent first, and in a conservation area you must give the council six weeks’ notice. Not sure? Send us the address and we’ll check for you. If you do need permission, we handle the application.
Are you fully insured?
Yes, fully covered. We carry £10 million public liability insurance through Convex Insurance, and all our team hold City & Guilds NPTC qualifications. Happy to send a copy of the insurance certificate before any work starts.
Do you remove all the waste?
Always. We leave your garden clean and tidy. All green waste is removed and recycled. If you’d like to keep logs for your wood burner, just say the word and we’ll cut them to size. We also sell seasoned hardwood logs if you need extra.
How quickly can you respond to emergency work?
For genuine emergencies (a tree on a house, blocking a road, or posing immediate danger) we aim to be with you the same day, often within a few hours. Call Antony directly on 07745 817067. For emergencies, don’t text, call.
What areas do you cover?
We’re based in Hassocks and look after trees and gardens across Sussex, Surrey, and the surrounding area. That includes Brighton, Lewes, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Horsham, Crawley, and plenty more. For bigger consultancy jobs we can travel further. Just get in touch.
Can you work near buildings or power lines?
Yes, it’s what we do most days. We regularly work in tight spaces next to houses, garages, fences, walls, and overhead cables. We take the tree apart in sections and lower each piece on ropes, so nothing drops where it shouldn’t.
What is a crown reduction?
It’s a way of making a tree smaller without ruining it. We shorten the branches back to natural growth points so the tree keeps its shape and stays healthy. It’s completely different from topping (which damages the tree and looks awful). If your tree’s getting too big, a crown reduction is usually the right answer.
